Shrek is a mean, green monster living in a swamp. But he is a good monster with a heart of gold. One day he saves a talkative and energetic Donkey. The donkey becomes a friend of the unwilling, lonely shrek.The Donkey was being chased by the soldiers of the king of Dulark, Lord Farquad.Lord Farquad wants to create the perfect kingdom. So he banishes all fairy tale creatures and chases them into Shrek's swamp. Lord Farquad also wants to find the perfect princess. He finds out through a magic mirror that the perfect Princess is Princess Fiona.Princess Fiona is a prisoner of a fire-breathing dragon.Shrek and Lord Farquad make a deal. So Shrek and the Donkey go and rescue the princess. However, on the way back, Shrek and Fiona fall in love. With the help of the donkey, they marry and live happily ever after. The original Shrek story, as written by William Steig, is somewhat different from the movie. The plot is the same and Shrek and his princess do marry and live happily ever after. But there is no Donkey!
